Over 20 years ago, Connie Allen and Marilyn Hanshaw began baking pies for auction lunch stands and a local pie delivery route.  The pie business began in their kitchens with a small delivery route but increased pie orders eventually forced them to purchase a separate building which has since been enlarged twice to accommodate their growing business.  “When our houses became filled with wall-to-wall pies, we opened a bakery in town,” Connie says.  Today, MarCon Pies sells 60 varieties of fresh and frozen pies to supermarkets, restaurants, and customers in their retail shop.

Recently, Connie and Marilyn sold their business but they haven’t hung up their rolling pins yet.  “We still come in to help with baking and give pointers to new employees,” Marilyn states.

Fresh baked, baked frozen or unbaked frozen pies are made Monday thru Friday and are delivered Tuesday thru Saturday to over 100 customers in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. The number of pies baked daily varies from 200 to 600 plus with the holiday rush raising those numbers to 1,000 to 1,500 per day.

Over 60 varieties of fruit, crunch, nut, crème and cheesecakes are available. The pie crust, which uses cholesterol free canola oil, was adapted from a family recipe and is very tender and flaky. Sugar free pies made with sucralose are available in fruit, crunch and crèmes and are becoming very popular.

MarCon is located at 124 W. 8th Street in Washington, Kansas, and is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Tours are always welcome but advance notice is needed and much appreciated. The public may purchase pies directly from the shop also.
